Summer Self-Care Rituals

Summer gives us so many opportunities to relax and rejuvenate – and you don’t have to wait until you go on vacation!

I’ve just returned from a trip to the French Riviera. It started out as a long weekend, but we ended up staying more than a week (thank you, #laptoplifestyle!).

As it was a spontaneous mini-vacay, I still had things that I needed to get done. However, surprisingly, I noticed that while I was spending plenty of time on the beach and strolling around in town, I managed to get the same amount of work done as I would have at home.

I could put this down to the fact that when I had something to do, I was more focused, but in reality, that’s not the only reason. When I looked back over my week and how I spent my time, the only change to my usual routine was that every day I made the effort to practice self-care.

Sleep


I’m a night owl, so I rarely go to bed early (especially in summer when the days are so long), but I kicked off my mini-vacay with sleeping in for two days in a row. It immediately made me feel rejuvenated!

Sleep is one of the most essential human needs, yet we often stretch our own limits until we become sleep-deprived (guilty as charged!). But you don't need to go away to give yourself permission to get a decent amount of sleep. Even an extra half hour every day can make a massive difference to how you feel – and this is time that you can easily gain by spending less time scrolling your Facebook feed!


Move


I went for a walk every single day. Walking alongside the beach is particularly mindful and relaxing (not to mention the fresh salty air and the other health benefits of being by the sea), but walking in town, or in a park is equally beneficial. Even an hour shopping on the high street is better than an hour sat procrastinating in front of your laptop!

Summer can be pretty hot (in Milan it usually gets so hot and humid that it is tempting to stay inside with the AC on all day), so outside sports activities can be challenging (except for water sports of course). But no matter the weather you can always go for a walk! And if you make it a daily habit, you’ll end up moving much more than you think! It’s as necessary for your circulation as it is for your mind to reboot.
 

Sunshine


Half an hour of sunshine in your backyard, balcony or the park is worth every minute! The best hours to fill up your body with essential D vitamins are usually morning and evening when the sunlight is less strong, and you can enjoy it without damaging your skin (this applies to going to the beach as well!). Sunshine is one of the most obvious benefits of the summertime, and we need to take advantage of it! Remember those dark and cold days in the winter? Now is the time to replenish your body with vitamin D! Not to mention that a little break is refreshing for your mind and that being outdoors is good for your general wellbeing!
 

Unplug


Put your phone on airplane mode, turn it off completely, or just simply stop looking at it for an hour. Enjoy the moment. Be where you are. Take a deep breath and enjoy the scenery. No matter where you are, focus on that. Watch the sky, listen to the birds and get lost in the sounds of nature. If you live in a city, put on your headphones, listen to some relaxing music and enjoy the views. Don't force anything, do what feels right. Listen to your body and allow yourself to follow its lead. Notice how beautiful your life is if you stop and appreciate what you already have. Switch off and just BE.
