The concept of “beauty” doesn’t have the best reputation. It’s often seen as a vain and frivolous thing that women are fooled into spending lots of money on. However, I don’t see it that way.
What “beauty” is really about is taking take of yourself – for yourself and not for others. A thorough and consistent beauty regime can help to make us feel at our best and ready to face whatever the world throws at us.
As with your wardrobe, it’s a good idea to review your health and beauty routine regularly, and at the very least every decade!
Here are the things you need to consider:
It might be that you haven’t changed your hairstyle since you left college. Perhaps you still dye your hair at home. Or maybe you’re still rocking a ponytail way after the age of 40. It could be that these things work for you – but what if they don’t?
What if you’re just ignoring that time is passing by, and without thinking about it you’ve stuck with something that’s outdated, not flattering or simply damaging your hair?
Changing your hairstyle and your hair color to work with your age and lifestyle is as important as it is to keep your wardrobe up-to-date. You can wear the most stylish and fashionable clothes on earth, but if your hair, makeup and general health is not on the same page, you will be disappointed with your overall look.
You might have been the queen of “no makeup bare face” in your twenties, but as you hit your thirties and forties (and the stress of life and number of sleepless hours grow), you’ll need to put in place a few new habits.
A little foundation or BB/CC cream, a touch of concealer (to cover up the dark circles that have appeared), blush, mascara and soft lip tint become your essentials.
The same goes for those who have been rocking a smokey eye and full coverage makeup. As you mature (and your lifestyle changes), it’s often better to have a softer look. Makeup which is too strong can negatively impact your style just as much as wearing no makeup at all.
It’s all about finding the right balance. You might love a bold lip but hate to put anything on your eyes. That can work too! Find the things that you love and the areas you want to accentuate and get good at it. But don't be lazy - a little investment goes a long way!
As beauty entrepreneur, Helena Rubinstein, said, "Whether you are sixteen or over sixty, remember, understatement is the first rule of a fine makeup artist."
As you age, your skin and hair change. You need to re-evaluate the products that you use frequently. In your twenties, you might have got away with a generic product (or even nothing at all), but in your thirties and forties, it’s time to get a little more specific.
Using the right creams on your face and body and choosing the right shampoo for your hair type can make a massive difference to the results you get. If you get the foundations right and use products that nourish and take care of your skin and hair, you’ll need much less makeup, and you’ll be able to spend less time styling your hair. Therefore it’s important to take this step seriously!
I’m not a health coach but I’m a big fan of healthy living, and I practice it in my own life on a daily basis.
Natural/organic products are essential to both my beauty routine and my diet. I don't buy into trends, though. I’ve been on this journey for almost 15 years now, so I have my own ideas of what’s healthy for me. I carefully select my beauty products based on their ingredients, and I do the same with food. I avoid harsh chemicals and artificial ingredients and everything that’s not whole food.
I don’t go crazy for all the fads about what you should or shouldn't eat. I eat sugar, but real cane sugar in moderation (yes, I put it in my coffee!). I eat sweets (I love a delicious fresh gelato or a little pastry) but never eat chocolate bars or supermarket “treats”. I eat bread but always fresh from the bakery. I eat a lot of fruits and vegetables fresh from the market.
My point is that it’s important to pay attention to your diet, but it’s equally important to enjoy life. You want to pay attention to what you eat but don't to go crazy about it. Being stressed about change creates resistance, and the harder you try, the less successful it'll be.
The same goes for exercise. It’s important to do something, but sometimes a walk in the park or a bike ride alongside the river can be just as beneficial as sweating it out in the gym – sometimes all you need is to get outside and breathe some fresh air!
When you’re making any changes to your life, you have to take it at your own pace. Sometimes a complete restart is what you need - changing everything all in one go. However, there’s nothing wrong with taking it slowly and introducing small changes one by one. It’s about what works best for you!
